What Players Could Benefit From Using An Overstable Driver?

The ideal candidates for using an overstable  drivers are power players or those disc golfers with a high arm speed.  This could mean professional disc golfers or those players that have played disc golf a long time. Those that have really honed their throwing technique.

The overstability of the disc prevents it from turning over when thrown with a lot of force. The flight path of an overstable disc also tends to be more predictable.

At this point, you may be thinking that only players with high arm speeds can benefit from using these discs but that’s far from the case.

While players with slower arm speed wouldn’t use an overstable disc as their primary driver, they can still keep one or two in their bag for certain situations which we will cover in the next section.

What Types Of Shots Work Best With An Overstable Driver?

The first situation that comes to mind, is if you playing in windy circumstances. Overstable discs will fight the wind and should stand up better to a headwind.

So if you are trying to take the wind out of the equation during your drive, reach for an overstable disc.

Other shots that lend well to throwing an overstable driver, are forearm throws, hyzer throws, flex shots and spike hyzer.

So if you are looking for a driver to use for any of these situations, then grab one of the discs I’ve listed here.

Final Thoughts

While you may think that only professional players should use overstable drivers, I would argue that most players could find some use for this type of disc in the right circumstance.

If you need a disc to hold up to the wind, grab one of the discs I’ve listed here. If you are looking for a disc to use for spike hyzers or flex shots, these discs will work well for that too.

If you end up getting one of these discs I’ve listed here, I’m confident it will find a permanent home in your bag.

If you want to add a great overstable midrange disc to your bag, check out this article.

What Does Understable Mean?

So, what does understable mean anyway? When we use the word unstable we’re referring to turn rating of the disc or the tendency of the disc to move left or right when it leaves your hand.

For an understable disc, if you are a right handed player throwing backhand, the disc will fly to the right after it leaves your hand.

You hear people refer to understable discs as flippy. This just means that the disc has a higher tendency to turn over.

What Can I Use These Discs For?

Understable fairway drivers are very versatile and can be used in a variety of situations. First off, they are ideal for newer players or players with slower arm speeds.

In the hands of one of these players, an understable fairway driver will fly relatively straight. By comparison, if one of these players tried to throw an overstable disc the disc would likely hyzer out too earlier.

In the hands of a power player, an unstable fairway driver will turn over with ease. This makes these drivers ideal for turnover shots. Looking to turn your disc over and finish right, grab one of these discs and put some heat on it.

Because these discs are easy to turnover, they make great rollers. If you put some anhyzer on one of these discs and get the angle just right, they should roll well for you.

Just when you thought there couldn’t be more than these discs can do, they also make great hyzer flip discs. If you release these discs with a ton of power on a hyzer angle that should flip to flat with ease. Watch them fly straight for days.

Final Thoughts

If you don’t have an understable fairway driver in your bag, you are really missing out. If you are a newer player, these discs will work great for your first driver.

When thrown flat at a lower speed, they should produce a relativity straight flight path. For more advanced players, these discs can be used for turnover shots and are ideal for hzyer flips.

If you are looking for a new roller disc you can use in the fairway, the discs I’ve mentioned here work great for that too. I hope you’ll pick one of these discs right now. Trust me. You won’t be disappointed.

What Does Stable Refer To?

The word stable is used to describe the stability of a disc or most specifically the turn of the disc.  The turn of the disc or the turn rating of the disc is used to describe the path of the disc when it leaves a player’s hand. A stable disc would fly in a straight path as it leaves a players hand. These discs are often referred to as point and shoot discs because the essentially fly where you through them.

You may also hear the terms overstable and understable. For a right-handed backhand throw, an overstable disc will turn to the left with it leave a players hand and an understable disc will fly to the right. While stable discs will fly straight and are considered very controllable, understable discs are considered easy to throw and are recommended for newer players. In contrast, overstable discs are recommended for more advanced players and they also work great in windy conditions.

What Are Stable Drivers Used For?

Stable discs are known for flying straight when the disc is thrown flat. They are usually referred to as controllable because the disc flies where you throw it. These discs work great for tunnel shots or other shots where you need to hit a specific gap to be successful. Stable discs are also known for hitting their lines. This basically means that the disc flies on the angle the thrower puts them on. So for a hyzer angle, a stable disc is going to fly on the hyzer and continue on that path. The same thing for an anhyzer angle.

What Kind Of Players Can Benefit From Using A Stable Driver?

Every disc golfer can benefit from having a stable driver in their bag. They are great for beginners, intermediate players and advanced players alike. All players will likely find themselves on a course or a tee pad that has a tunnel shot or find themselves in a situation where they need to hit a gap and a stable driver works great for this situation when the disc is thrown flat.

Final Thoughts

All players can benefit from having a stable driver in their bag. The ability to throw a disc straight will come in handy in many situations on the disc golf course and a stable driver when thrown flat will accomplish this. Stable drivers are also great because they are very controllable. They are considered point and shoot discs and tend to stay on the line they are put on. Consider grabbing one of the Best Stable Disc Golf Drivers I’ve listed above and expect to improve on hitting your tunnel shots and gaps better.

My Assumptions About Beginners

When I made this list for beginning disc golf players, I made some assumptions about them. I assumed that beginners have a slower arm speed than the average disc golf player. I made the assumption that beginners are looking for more distance out of their throws. Also, I assumed that newer players are using a backhand technique when throwing and not a forehand technique.

So if you are using this list to decide on which Innova discs to go with, keep these assumptions in mind.

What Makes A Good Beginner Disc?

When making this list I was looking for discs that were understable and had a good amount of glide. This is important because newer players tend to have a slower arm speed and with this slower arm speed will get more distance out of an understable disc. The reason glide is important is because the higher the glide the longer the disc tends to stay in the air. Discs with high glide will remain in the air longer and tend to fly further.

My Thoughts On Disc Weight For Beginner Drivers

For beginners, I would recommend a lighter weight for drivers and mid-range discs, especially when it comes to women and younger players. New disc golfers will be able to pick up a lower weight disc and throw it farther with less effort. Some exceptions to this recommendation might be more athletic individuals and people you have a lot of experience in a throwing sport, like baseball.

For discs, the range of 180g – 169g is considered max weight and beginners would definitely want to stay away from these weights.  New players might want to start at 160g or lower and for younger players 150 or lower.

My Thoughts On Great Innova Plastics For Beginners

When I recommend Innova plastic to newer players, I usually recommend star or Gstar plastics for discs they are going to throw. When I say throw, I mean mid-range discs, drivers or putters they plan on driving with. The star and Gstar plastics have a great grip, are easier to control but also stand up to the damage that throwing can cause.

For putters, I like the DX plastic. DX plastic has an even better grip than Star or GStar but isn’t as strong. DX is also a great economical option as it’s the cheapest plastic Innova provides. I would not recommend the champion plastic. While it is a great durable plastic, it’s harder to grip and champion discs tend to be more stable than other versions.

Final Thoughts

New players should definitely consider Innova when they are buying their first discs. They make great discs that players of all skill levels would be happy with. They have so many great discs and plastic options to choose from.

I hope my Best Innova Discs For Beginners list here has made it easy for you to pick your first disc if you are going with Innova. Pick any disc on this Best Innova Discs For Beginners list and you’ll have a great time out on the disc golf course.

So if you are using this list to decide on which driver to go with, keep these assumptions in mind.

What Makes A Good Beginner Driver?

When making this list I was looking for discs that were understable and had a high amount of glide. This is important because newer players tend to have a slower arm speed and with this slower arm speed will get more distance out of an understable disc. The reason glide is important is because the higher the glide the longer the disc tends to stay in the air. Disc with high glide will remain in the air longer and tend to fly further.

My Thoughts On Disc Weight For Beginners

For beginners, I would recommend a lighter weight for drivers, especially when it comes to women and younger players. New disc golfers will be able to pick up a lower weight disc and throw it farther. Some exceptions to this recommendation might be more athletic individuals and people you have a lot of experience in a throwing sport, like baseball. For discs, the range of 180g – 169g is considered max weight and beginners would definitely want to stay away from these weights. New players might want to start at 160g or lower weight disc and for younger players 150 for lower.

What To Do With These Discs After You Advance?

As beginners advanced they improve their technique and their arm speed goes up. So you if you are driving with one of these discs, over time you might notice that they will turn over more or aren’t flying in their normal path. When this starts to happen you will want to transition to a more stable driver. But don’t take these discs out of your bag. They will still work great for turnover shots, rollers, and hyzer flip shots.

Final Thoughts

Newer players will definitely benefit from throwing understable discs at lighter weights. When I started playing, I wanted to quickly move from the leopard to a more stable disc but then I quickly moved back because it was more difficult to throw and I wasn’t getting the distance I was used to. If you are a new player, I hope you’ll consider grabbing one of these discs in my list. If not, I hope you’ll remember my recommendations when looking for a driver. To recap, you are looking for an understable, fairway driver with high glide at a lower weight. Use a disc like that and you’ll have a much better time on the course and see more distance off the tee.

Disc Golf Discs That Float

No ratings yet. I learned a valuable lesson a few years ago while playing a round of disc golf at my local course. If you play disc golf at any regularity this might be useful to you. The thing I learned the hard way was you just never know when you are going to need one of disc golf discs that float in water. Even on courses you may not think this kind of disc would be useful they can come in handy.

My local course doesn’t have any traditional water traps. There aren’t any lakes or ponds along the fairways or next to the putting greens. I’m not throwing my discs next to or across any streams or rivers. But I still found a way to sink my disc in some water.

It was a nice warm day with the sun shining and the course was mostly dry but there were still some damp areas. It had rained hard a few days before and some parts of the course where flooded. On the first hole, I stepped on the tee and selected my favorite driver and launched a hard drive through the wooded fairway. I lost sight of my disc as it passed over a hill and to my unbelieving ears I heard a splash.

As I came over the top of the hill I saw that the fairway had flooded. I knew my disc was somewhere in the water but I couldn’t see it because the water was murky and filled with leaves. After about thirty minutes or so of looking, I gave up. Using a stick in the water to try and locate the disc just wasn’t going to work.

So if you find yourself on a disc golf course with some water hopefully you’ll have one of the discs below. If you are as unlucky as I was and end up with your disc in the water at least you’ll be able to easily locate it and fish it out.

What’s makes a great disc for headwinds?

When facing a headwind you’ll want to reach for an overstable disc with extra fade.

A headwind will cause the disc to act less stable. Using an overstable disc with more fade will help counteract the disc’s tendency to turn over.

Another tip for throwing in a headwind would be to throw a faster disc. You’ll want a faster disc because when compared to the wind, the disc is moving faster than normal without increasing your release speed.

This will ensure the disc flies as intended.

What does overstable mean?

If you are reading this article and aren’t sure what overstable means, I’ve got you covered. When we use the term overstable we’re referring to turn rating of the disc or the tendency of the disc to move left or right when it leaves your hand.

For an overstable disc, if you are a right-handed player throwing backhand, the disc has a tendency to fly to the left after it leaves your hand. For lefties, it’s the opposite. The disc will tend to move to the right when being thrown backhanded.

What else can I use these discs for?

While overstable discs work great in a headwind, they can be used for other situations as well. First off, overstable discs work great in the hands of power players. So if you are an advanced player that can throw really far. Try an overstable disc.

Shots that lend well to throwing an overstable midrange disc, are forearm throws, hyzer throws, flex shots and spike hyzer. If you are looking for a disc to use for any of these throws, an overstable disc is a great option.

Let’s take a look at the best discs for tailwinds in greater detail:

Innova Daedalus – Speed: 13 Glide: 6 Turn: -4 Fade: 2

The Daedalus is a great option for an understable distance driver. When you need to throw far in a tailwind, you are going to want to reach for this disc.

This Innova disc has a lot of turn and glide making it the ideal disc for a beginner.

If you are a more advanced disc golfer or you just have a fast arm, the Daedalus makes a great option for your turnover shots and hyzer flips.

You won’t be sorry if you get the Daedalus for your bag.

Check it out on Amazon.

Check it out on Infinite Discs.

Discraft Heat – Speed: 9 Glide: 6 Turn: -3 Fade: 1

Discraft made a great fairway driver for tailwinds when they created the Heat. This disc has tons of glide and quite a bit of turn which is great for new disc golfers.

For lower arm speed players, this disc is easy to throw. For higher arm speed players, this disc works well for hyzer flips and turnovers.

Need a new roller disc? Consider the Discraft Heat. You won’t be disappointed in this great fairway driver made by Discraft.

Check it out on Amazon.

Check it out on Infinite Discs.

Latitude 64 Pearl – Speed: 4 Glide: 6 Turn: -4 Fade: 1

If you are looking for a midrange disc to throw in a tailwind, the Pearl is the best option.

For new players, the Pearl is a great option as well. This midrange disc made by Latitude 64 was designed with new players in mind.

It has a lot of glide and low stability making it easy to throw. If you are a disc golfer with an underdeveloped game, this disc should fly straight for you.

For more seasoned players, the Pearl will work well for anhyzer shots and hyzer flips. This understandable midrange is a great choice for anyone. Put it in your bag and you won’t regret it.

Check it out on Amazon.

Check it out on Infinite Discs.

Dynamic Discs Gavel – Speed: 3 Glide: 5 Turn: -2 Fade: 0.5

If you are looking for a putter to throw in a tailwind, choose this disc by Dynamic Discs.

The Gavel is a great putter in its own right and a good choice for any new disc golfer. This Dynamic Discs putter has an understable flight which will make it super easy to throw.

The disc has a lot of glide for such a slow disc which will carry it all the way to the chains. This disc has a similar shape and feels like the popular Dynamic Discs, Judge.

If you are looking for a great putter, you simply can’t go wrong with the Gavel.

Check it out on Amazon.

What makes a great disc for tailwinds

When throwing a disc with a tailwind, the disc will tend to act more overstable. To counter this, throwing an unstable disc is recommended.

In a tailwind, you’ll want to throw a slower disc than normal. The disc is moving in the same direction as the wind, so relative to the wind the disc is moving slower than normal. Picking a slower disc will ensure the disc files like you want it to.

What does understale mean?

So, what does the term understable mean anyway? When we say unstable we’re referring to the turn rating of the disc or the tendency of the disc to move left or right when it leaves a disc golfer’s hand.

For an understable disc, if you are a right-handed player throwing backhand, the disc will tend to fly to the right after it leaves your hand. For lefties, it’s the opposite. The disc will tend to move to the left.

You may have heard people refer to understable discs as flippy. This just means that the disc has a higher tendency to flip over.

What else can I use these discs for?

Understable discs are very versatile and can be used in many situations. First off, they are ideal for newer players or players with slower arm speeds.

In the hands of one of these players, an understable disc will fly relatively straight. By comparison, if one of these players tried to throw an overstable disc, the disc would likely hyzer out too earlier and not fly very far.

In the hands of a power player, an unstable disc will turn over with ease. This makes these discs ideal for turnover shots and hyzer flips.

Final Thoughts

Don’t let a windy day stop you from playing the game you love. Playing in the wind is something all disc golfers have to learn to deal with if they want to improve their game and get better.

As long as you are using the right disc in a headwind or tailwind, you should be fine. I hope this article will help you pick the right discs for your bag.

If you pick one of the discs I’ve outlined here, you should do well the next time the wind picks up at your local disc golf course.

Things To Consider When Buying A Disc Golf Disc

Fairway drivers, midrange drivers, putter discs, and distance are the four main categories of golf discs. The distance the disc offers is what counts most to beginning disc golfers.

Although most shots may be made with any disc (some more effectively than others), discs are usually categorized by how quickly they “fly” or cut through the air.

Maximum Distance Drivers

Discs that can fly through the air at extremely high speeds are categorized as maximum distance or faraway drivers. When thrown with the proper force and technique, these discs have the ability to travel over 400 feet.

When thrown improperly, the discs lose control and cause frustration. Drivers with a maximum range have thick rims (2.1 cm or more) and have a speed rating of 10 or above.

Control Drivers

Control drivers, also known as fairway drivers, are discs that don’t always fly as quickly as distance drivers may. In general, fairway drivers are easier to control, more stable, and have thinner rims. They can also fly straighter.

Putt & Approach

The slowest flying discs for disc golf are putters. Typically, they are manageable and won’t get out of hand. Putters generally always fly fairly straight in comparison to drivers. They are useful for approach shots that land close to the basket to create easy putts and for landing in the basket itself.

You might want to think about throwing a putter if you’re searching for a disc that will fly straight without a significant end-of-flight fade.

Today, many of the discs categorized as “fairway drivers” were once power discs. The distance these older discs can go is less amazing as disc golf technology and innovation advance. Having said that, fairway drivers will typically perform better for novice disc golfers than maximum distance drivers.

Mid-range Discs

Midrange Discs feature rounded, less aerodynamic edges and fly more slowly. Many midrange discs are older discs that were once considered distance drivers, like fairway drivers.

Other Things To Consider

Diameter

The diameter of the disc is measured from rim to rim. Golf discs typically range in size from 21 to 21.4 cm, with few notable exceptions.

Height

The disc is this tall. In general, faster discs are shorter. Average driver heights range from 1.65 centimeters for distance, 1.77 centimeters for fairway, 1.97 centimeters for midrange, and 2.11 cm for a putter.

Rim Height

The area where you grab the rim is where it is measured. Although it’s not always the case, tall discs typically have higher rims. It depends on the plastic’s thickness and the degree of the disc’s actual external curve.

Rim Width

Commonly referred to as “Wing Length,” it measures the disc’s rim’s width. Wider rims are often found on faster discs. The PDGA restricts rim width to be no thicker than 2.5 centimeters. Knowing the rim width can be crucial for grip comfort.

Best Driving Putters 2022

No ratings yet.
When I started playing disc golf, I didn’t realize you could do anything but putt with putter discs. It wasn’t until a fellow disc golfer gave me the advice to disc down, that I tried my putter off the tee. After that, I was a changed man. Driving with a putter gave me greater control over my drives. When throwing my putter off the tee, the disc seemed like it had less of a chance to skip away from the basket. If you are looking for the best driving putters 2022, you are in the right spot. I’ve combined my favorite putters for driving in this article. You’ll have plenty of options to consider before you grab the perfect putter for the job.

What makes a great driving putter?

There are two things I look for that make a putter great for driving. For one, is the putter stable enough to hold it’s flight path when driving? Meaning if I put some heat on this disc, is it going to turn over when I may not want it to.

The second thing I consider is how the putter feels in my hand with my power grip. If the putter feels awkward or I just can’t get a good grip on the putter, then I’m not going to want to use it for driving. This is more of a personal preference but is still important to consider.

One final thing you may want to think about is if you want a lot of glide out of your driving putter. This will help get you some added distance off your drive but if you are off target you run the chance of the disc floating past the basket.

If you want extra glide, I recommended the Wizard and the Roach. If you don’t want any extra glide, any other the disc mentioned here would be a great fit for you.

When should you reach for your driving putter?

Putters work great for driving on shorter disc golf holes. Of course, this depends on the player, but a hole that is 250 feet or shorter could be considered a good option for using a putter off the tee.

Holes that require a straight shot or a shot with a slight turn would also be a good option for a putter. The putters I’ve mentioned above are super straight flyers and because of the putter’s speed, they turn slower than a midrange or driver.

If I’m facing down a short tunnel shot or a shorter shot through the woods, I would consider selecting my main driver putter.

Another situation a driving putter would be perfect for is when you want your disc to land in a specific location and not skip or slide very far. Putters tend to hit and stay down. If you can reach a basket with a putter but there is a drop off right behind it, use a driving putter.

Final thoughts

If you haven’t considered driving with a putter, you really should. They are great for short drives and perfect for when you want the disc to land next to the basket and not skip away.

You’ll get an excellent driving putter if you pick one I’ve listed here but if you don’t like want you see, just use my tips for picking a good driving putter and you can’t go wrong.
