What Is The Tomahawk?

The tomahawk is an overhand disc golf throw. The motion is similar to throwing a baseball overhanded.

When throwing a tomahawk most players use the same grip as they do for their forehand drivers.

The disc is held vertically with the flight plate facing toward the thrower. This is the opposite to the other overhand throw, which is called the thumber.

For this throw the flight plate faces away from the throwing with the player’s thumb on the rim.  

When Should I Use A Tomahawk Throw?

There are several reason to use a tomahawk throw.

One is for its accuracy. If you are in a situation that you need to pinpoint where the disc should land, using the tomahawk throw can get you there.

If the ground is level, you can drop a disc very accuracy with a tomahawk.

Another situation would be if you need to throw over an obstacle. The tomahawk allows you to throw the disc in arching flight path which is great for throwing over stuff.

My Assumptions About Beginners

When I made this list for beginning disc golf players, I made some assumptions about them.

I assumed that beginners have a slower arm speed than the average disc golf player. I made the assumption that beginners are looking for more distance out of their throws.

So if you are using this list to decide on which Innova discs to go with, keep these assumptions in mind.

What Makes A Good Beginner Disc?

When making this list I was looking for discs that were understable and had a good amount of glide.

This is important because newer players tend to have a slower arm speed and with this slower arm speed will get more distance out of an understable disc.

The reason glide is important is because the higher the glide the longer the disc tends to stay in the air.

Discs with high glide will remain in the air longer and tend to fly further.   

My Thoughts On Disc Weight For Beginners

For beginners, I would recommend a lighter weight for drivers and mid-range discs, especially when it comes to women and younger players.

New disc golfers will be able to pick up a lower weight disc and throw it farther with less effort.

Some exceptions to this recommendation might be more athletic individuals and people you have a lot of experience in a throwing sport, like baseball.

For discs, the range of 180g – 169g is considered max weight and beginners would definitely want to stay away from these weights.  

New players might want to start at 160g or lower and for younger players 150 or lower.

When we use the word understable we’re referring to turn rating of the disc or the tendency of the disc to move left or right when it leaves a player’s hand.

If you reference the flight rating system or the 4 digit number system written on most discs, the turn rating in the third number in the sequence.

Discs with a negative number are generally considered to be understable. The lower the number, the more understable the disc.

For an understable disc, if you are a right handed player throwing backhand, the disc will fly to the right after it leaves your hand.

You hear people refer to understable discs as flippy. This just means that the disc has a higher tendency to turn over.

What Can I Use These Discs For?

Understable distance drivers are very versatile and can be used in a variety of situations.

First off, they are ideal for newer players or players with slower arm speeds. In the hands of one of these players, an understable distance driver will fly relatively straight.

If these same players were given stable or overstable discs, these discs would likely hyzer to earlier and not get much distance.

What Players Could Benefit From Using An Overstable Driver?

The ideal candidates for using an overstable  drivers are power players or those disc golfers with a high arm speed.  This could mean professional disc golfers or those players that have played disc golf a long time. Those that have really honed their throwing technique.

The overstability of the disc prevents it from turning over when thrown with a lot of force. The flight path of an overstable disc also tends to be more predictable.

At this point, you may be thinking that only players with high arm speeds can benefit from using these discs but that’s far from the case.

While players with slower arm speed wouldn’t use an overstable disc as their primary driver, they can still keep one or two in their bag for certain situations which we will cover in the next section.

What Types Of Shots Work Best With An Overstable Driver?

The first situation that comes to mind, is if you playing in windy circumstances. Overstable discs will fight the wind and should stand up better to a headwind.

So if you are trying to take the wind out of the equation during your drive, reach for an overstable disc.

Other shots that lend well to throwing an overstable driver, are forearm throws, hyzer throws, flex shots and spike hyzer.

So if you are looking for a driver to use for any of these situations, then grab one of the discs I’ve listed here.  

Final Thoughts

While you may think that only professional players should use overstable drivers, I would argue that most players could find some use for this type of disc in the right circumstance.

What do the disc golf numbers mean?

No ratings yet. It’s one of the first questions I asked when I started playing. I got my first Innova starter pack at a sporting goods store. It came with a putter, midrange and driver. Those terms seemed pretty straightforward to me. I use the putter to putt with, the midrange disc to throw a medium distance shot and the driver to throw off the tee or for a long distance throw. Two of the discs had a cool picture of an animal on the front and the putter had a picture of a disc flying into a basket. Below each picture there were four squares and in each square was a number. I remember seeing these numbers and asking out loud to myself “What do the numbers mean?” But after asking the question I didn’t immediately go do the research and find out. I went outside to throw my discs around instead. It wasn’t until I started thinking about buying more discs that I did the research. Like most newer players I thought I needed a disc that would allow me to throw a longer drive. I also just wanted to experiment with different discs and figure out what types of discs suited me. That’s when I came back to those disc golf numbers meaning and looked it up.

Here is what I found:

The four numbers on the disc are referred to as the flight rating system. This system was developed by Innova Champion Discs with the purpose of describing each disc’s flight characteristics. The system has since been adopted by most discs manufacturers. The four numbers in the rating system stand for: Speed, Glide, Turn, and Fade.

Speed

The first number in the sequence is the speed rating. It refers to how fast the disc can fly but it also refers to how fast the disc must be thrown in order for it to fly properly. Depending on the disc manufacturer the numbers can range from 1 to 14. The speed of the disc also indicates the disc’s purpose. Putters range from 1-3. Midranges disc has a 4 or 5 rating. Fairway drivers range from 6-8. Finally, distances drivers have a speed rating from 9-14.

Faster rated discs can handle being thrown into the wind because they cut the wind better. Slower rated discs don’t do well when thrown into the wind and must be thrown with more force when throwing upwind. Although slower rated discs must be thrown harder to reach the same distances as a higher rated disc, they are more accurate and easier to throw. Slower discs also do better with a tailwind.

Glide

The second number in the sequence is the glide rating. It shows how well the disc maintains loft while in the air. The higher the rating the easier it is for the disc to remain in the air. The numbers in this rating range from 1 to 7. Discs that have more glide are easier to throw farther distances. Discs that have less glide are easier to throw with accuracy and do better in windy conditions.  

Turn

The third number in the sequence is the turn rating. It describes the tendency of the disc to curve when it immediately leaves your hand. So for a player who is right-handed and throwing a backhand shot, the more turn the disc has the more likely it is to move to the left or turn over. The turn rating ranges from + 1 to -5.

So keeping with the right-handed player throwing a backhand shot, a disc with a + 1 rating is considered overstable and will turn left. A disc with a 0 rating is considered stable and will fly straight. While a disc with a negative rating is considered understable and will turn right.  The more turn a disc has the less accurate it is in the wind.

Fade

The fourth number in the sequence is the fade rating. It describes how the disc finishes at the end of it’s flight. A fade rating of zero indicates that the disc won’t fade and will finish straight. A higher fade rating means that as the disc slows down the more likely the disc is to hook. For a right-handed player throwing backhanded, this means that with a high fade rating the disc will hook to the left. Players wanting to throw a skip shot would use a disc with more fade.

Putting It All Together

Let’s say we have a disc with a flight rating of 12, 5, -4, 4. The disc would be a distance driver because of the speed rating. The disc would have a lot of glide and would stay in the air quite easily. If you are a right-handed player throwing the disc backhanded the disc would fly to right after leaving your hand. We know this because of the -4 turn rating. Once the disc slows down and starts to lose it’s spin it would hook to the right because of the 4 fade rating.

Flight Rating System For Beginners

If you are a new player here are some recommendations based on each component of the flight rating system discussed above:

Speed: Beginners should stay away from high-speed discs. As a new player, you haven’t developed the technique and arm speed to take advantage of a high-speed rating. As a result of this, if you are throwing a disc with a high-speed rating it will likely act more overstable than intended and your throw will cut a hard left if you are throwing a right-handed backhand shot. If newer players are going to purchase a driver starting out, it recommended using a fairway driver which have a speed rating from 6 to 8.   

Glide: New players looking for more distance should throw discs with higher glide ratings. For shots that require more accuracy like putts and approach shots, a lower glide rating may need to be considered as the disc should be more accurate. You don’t want your shots floating past the target. In windy conditions, discs with less glide tend to be more accurate.     

Turn: Newer players will find discs with more turn easier to throw. For more advanced players discs with higher turn ratings will turn over more easily but for newer players, these same discs will likely not turn over and actually fly a straighter path. Discs with high turn also make great rollers.

Fade: When it comes to the fade rating there isn’t a general recommendation for newer players. While there isn’t a suggested amount of fade for beginners it’s important that players keep in mind the amount of fade the disc has when planning out their throw. Discs with higher fade will hook at the end of their flight and are more likely to skip. Discs with lower fade will have less of a hook at the end and disc with a zero fade will finish straight.

When Should You Throw A Stable Disc

When it comes to disc golf, each one serves a unique function. Some discs may be described as stable, overstable, or understable. However, it is essential to understand disc stability and how it might improve your gameplay.

When Should A Stable Disc Be Thrown?

A disc is considered neutral or generally “stable” if it does not display either overstability or understandability. When thrown properly, a stable disc that travels straight may be the best option if you toss it across the field. Shooting in a perfectly straight line is more difficult than it seems, and many players struggle with it.

For instance, in a heavily forested location, you may only have a narrow passageway to throw through, which would need a perfectly straight line of flight. It would be advisable to use a stable disc in this circumstance.

A disc that is stable in flight will continue on its intended route regardless of the angle at which it is launched. Skilled players know how to adapt their shots to the many circumstances they experience by releasing a stable disc at varying angles.

About Stability In Disc Golf

One may think of disc stability as a spectrum, with overstable at one end, understable at the other, and neutral in the center. You may find discs in various stabilities, and their flight characteristics will vary according to the strength and speed with which you throw them.

Overstable discs are more resistant to the effects of wind, but they also demand more force and arm speed to accomplish their goals. Neutral discs are exactly what their name implies; they are unaffected by the orientation in which they are placed. 

For beginners, understable discs are preferable since they are more inclined to spin and can still go in straight lines at slower throwing rates. The drawback to this, however, is that they are often subjected to mistreatment at the hands of the wind.

Difference Between Overstable, Understable, & Stable Discs

Discs may be overstable, understable, or stable, and it’s easy to determine the difference if you’re uncertain. Each disc will have a unique trajectory when thrown in the same direction by a right-handed thrower with a backhand grip (RHBH). If you’re backhand throwing, it will reverse the direction.

When thrown RHBH, an overstable disc will lose altitude and fade to the left towards the conclusion of its flight. When thrown RHBH, an understable disc will finish its flight path with a rightward spin. Stable discs will usually go in a straight line with no noticeable fade or turn.

How Stability Can Help Your Disc Golf Game

Stable discs are somewhere in the center of the range between very overstable and extremely understable. You can expect highly stable and straight-flying discs, perfect for players with some experience. 

Beginners should stay away since these discs are still overstable and need a high rate of speed to fly straight. Stability is a complex concept since it’s so important to your game, and knowing about stability may aid you in a few ways:

First, disc options throughout a wide range of holes and shots. Therefore, knowing when and how to utilize certain discs is essential.

If you need to throw a roller through some dense wood, you should get that understable disc. Alternatively, you might use a very overstable disc to hyzer hard left to avoid various hazards.

Second, stability is far more complicated than most golfers give it credit for, so many players struggle to comprehend its full significance. The idea is difficult, but try not to let that stop you from understanding it.

It’s easy to achieve stability. Gain an understanding of the foundations of stability, and then construct your strategy focused on them.

How To Improve The Stability Of A Disc

You cannot improve a disc’s stability. Normal play wears out discs, making them less stable. An overstable disc, or any disc more stable than the one being used, is your sole alternative.

When thrown, a disc’s flight path is the greatest indicator of its stability. An overstable disc thrown by a right-handed, high-hands (RHBH) thrower will initially fly straight but then drift to the left as its speed decreases.

When Does A Disc Become Stable?

If you toss a neutral or stable disc, it will go in a straight path. An RHBH throw will cause an initial flight followed by a rightward turn. The disc itself often indicates a disc’s stability level. This is a quick method to determine if you have discs you need clarification.

Learn To Throw A Stable Disc

Throwing overstable, understable, and stable discs at varying release angles is one way to improve your game as you acquire experience and expertise. Keep in mind that every disc will inevitably become progressively less stable. What The Heck Is Disc Golf Anhyzer?

So What Is Disc Golf Anhyzer?

If you’ve played disc golf even for a little bit, you’ll know that each throw follows a similar pattern.

If you are a right-handed player and you are throwing your disc backhand with a flat release, the disc will generally fly straight and then fade to the left.

There are a lot of different factors that can change this pattern but for the most part, your flight path will match this.

This normal flight pattern is called a Hyzer.

Knowing what a hyzer is is important because the opposite is anhyzer. 

An anhyzer flight would be when the disc finishes the opposite way to a hyzer.

So, if we stick to the right-handed player throwing backhanded, for the anhyzer shot the disc will finish right instead of left.

This can be a really handy shot when you are out of the disc golf course because not every hole is set up the same and the ability to land the disc in multiple ways will definitely lead to lower scores.

So how to you get your disc to flight this way?

Well, it’s accomplished by releasing the disc in a different way. This different way is referred to has the anhyzer release.

The Anhyzer release is anytime your release the disc with the wing of the disc higher than the side of the disc you hold in your hand. 

Disc Golf Anhyzer Release With Different Stabilities

During my explanation of what an anhyzer was, I stated that discs generally follow the same path but some factors can affect this path.

One of these things is disc stability.

So a stable disc released with an anhyzer is going to fly differently than an understable disc released in the same way.  

Learning the anhyer release is very important in disc golf because of the different types of shots you can achieve with it.

Let’s take a look at the different stabilities and what types of shots they generally achieve with an anhyzer release.

Overstable Disc = Flex Shot

An overstable disc released with an anhyzer angle will fly relatively straight path or a very tight s-curve.

This shot is generally referred to as the flex shot and could be used with you want the disc to have a slight turn once it is released from your hand and then flex back quickly.

This isn’t a shot that would be used often but would be nice to learn for the perfect situation.

Stable Disc = Turn Over

A stable disc released with an anhyzer angle will turn over.

This means that when the disc is released it will tend to turn right for a right handed backhand throw and would turn left for a left handed backhand.

This shot is usually referred to the turn over shot for obvious reasons and is a great shot to learn and have in your disc golf arsenal.

Being able to control the turn of the disc will come in handy for wooded shots.

Having the disc finish right instead of left (or left instead of right for you lefties) is also a great assist.  

Understable Disc = Roller

A unstable disc released with an anhyzer angle will turn over more than a stable disc and usually result in the disc heading toward the ground.

When done correctly, the disc will continue to roll.

This shot is generally referred to as a roller.

It’s another important shot to have available to you when you need it.

It works well when you have a low ceiling. The roller allows you to just roll right under it.

You can also use it when you need the disc to finish the opposite way, just like the turn over shot. As the roller slows down it tends to curve to the right for a right handed player.

The roller also works when you need some extra distance. The disc tends to roll further on the ground than it would fly through the air.

Does A Forehand Replace A Disc Golf Anhyzer?

A lot of players would argue that they don’t need to develop their anhyzer shot if they have a good forehand.

I would say you should learn and develop both.

While you can get the disc to finish the same way with a forehand as you can with an anhyzer release, the flight path the disc will fly in will be different.

A forehand shot will tend to fly straight and then fade at the end while an anhyzer shot will start to turn when it’s release and hold the turn all the way through (depending on the disc stability.)

Both could and should be used in different situations. If you pay a lot of wooded courses, you probably already know what I’m talking about.

Final Thoughts

Now that you know what anhyzer means, I hope you’ll take the time to practice it.

If you take the time to learn the turnover shot and the backhand roller they  will become huge assists on the course and will lead to lower scores when used at the correct time.

The flex shot is more of a utility shot but could still come in handy.

I just want to stress that even if you have an excellent forehand, you should still consider adding the anhyzer release to your game.
